Watch live from NetApp Insight Berlin 2017

Looking to explore NetApp Inc.’s specific products and innovation related to current trends in cloud and hyperconverged infrastructure, or HCI, SiliconANGLE is at NetApp Insight 2017, currently underway in Berlin, Germany, with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)

As the last remaining standalone storage service provider, NetApp is now playing catchup in both cloud and hyperconvergence. Its strategic acquisition of SolidFire Inc. in 2015 is key to NetApp’s product line for cloud integration, putting it in a good position for the all-flash storage array business. Amazon Web Services Inc. continues to dominate the cloud infrastructure market, according to Gartner Inc.’s recent report, followed by Alibaba Cloud and Google Cloud.

“NetApp was slow to change, but it’s a large company with lots of resources,” said Dave Vellante, co-founder and chief analyst at Wikibon Research (Wikibon is owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE). “New management has NetApp turning around.”

NetApp announced the expansion of its hybrid cloud partnership with Microsoft Azure at its NetApp Insight conference in Las Vegas. “Customers can now bring their applications to Azure and continue to get the scale, performance and reliability offered by NetApp’s data services,” said Tad Brockway, Microsoft Corp.’s general manager for Azure Storage.

The recent launch of NetApp HCI has the company supposedly entering the HCI market, despite some feeling it’s more of a converged system. Earlier this month, NetApp and Fujitsu Ltd. launched NFLEX Converged Infrastructure, which is designed to simplify the implementation and operation of virtual environments.

While previously NetApp’s biggest strength was its singular offering, the company recognized the need for more platforms. “They’re working on migrating their install base to more modern products, including flash technology,” Vellante said. “NetApp now appears to be on a market share-gaining trajectory again, as they’ve been vulnerable the past few years. NetApp is in a position to protect their install base and grow it.”

Keynote speakers at NetApp Insight Berlin include various NetApp executives, including Daniel Berg, vice president and general manager of SolidFire business unit; Dave Hitz, executive vice president and founder; Anthony Lye, senior vice president of cloud business unit; and William Miller, senior vice president, chief information officer.

Other NetApp executives who will present at the event include Joel Reich, executive vice president of product operations; Henri Richard, executive vice president of worldwide field and customer operations; Octavian Tanase, senior vice president ONTAP (OSSG); and Alexander Wallner, senior vice president and general manager of EMEA.

NetApp Insight will also include various guest speakers like Kenneth Cukier, data editor at The Economist; Laura DuBois, group vice president of enterprise storage, servers and infrastructure software for International Data Corp.; and Adam Steltzner, NASA engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
