Google updates its job search tool with estimated salary ranges, commute times and more

Earlier this year, Google LLC unveiled tools within Search to help people find jobs. The tools form part of the company’s “Google for Jobs” initiative that it introduced at its I/O Conference.

To make the job search experience even easier for users, the tech giant Wednesday rolled out additional features, including salary information, location filters and a more streamlined application process.

To help better prepare workers as automation starts to affect the job market, Google announced last month that it was pledging $1 billion over the next five years to help educate and train workers to find jobs and grow their businesses.

The job-hunting service that is integrated into Google Search will now include salary information, a factor that is often missing from job postings. For job listings that don’t include a salary, the tech giant will draw data from sites like Glassdoor, PayScale, LinkedIn, Paysa and others. Google will show estimated salary ranges based on the job title, location and employer. For jobs that do list a salary, Google will show a comparison to the estimated range for that specific job.

For job seekers looking for a job within a certain commute distance from their home, Google is introducing a new Location filter. When selecting the Location filter, users can opt for a distance between two and 200 miles from their home, as well as select specific cities. Alternatively, if they are flexible, they can select the “anywhere” option.

Google’s job service aggregates jobs from multiple sites and knows when the same job has been posted on different sites. Previously Google would direct users to the site that has the most complete listing, but with the latest update, Google is letting job seekers choose.

For job listings that are advertised on multiple sites, including Monster.com, LinkedIn, Facebook or CareerBuilder, Google will allow users to select on which site they apply. This will allow users to select their preferred site where they have already built up a profile.

Finally, Google is introducing a feature that will allow users to save jobs within Google Search and return later. To save a job listing, users will tap the bookmark button next to the relevant job and all of them will appear in Google’s “Saved jobs” tab.

The salary, location and application features are rolling out now, while the new save feature will roll out in a “couple of weeks.”
