The invisible world of software spending in multi-cloud environments
The rush toward cloud migration has delivered much of the flexibility and agility expected by enterprise businesses but has resulted in some unforeseen challenges too. According to SoftwareONE, 33 percent of companies overspend on their portfolio — a significant portion of most budgets within the information technology departments, and overall spend.
“They’re having a harder time understanding what are they truly spending on software,” said Mike Gersten (pictured), global innovation and strategy officer at SoftwareONE AG. With the current growth speed of cloud technology pushing enterprises rapidly into yet another new tech landscape, Gersten and his team are working to solve this and other cloud issues by providing supportive measures in data processing through SoftwareONE’s management platform, PyraCloud.
Mike Gersten sat down with Stu Miniman (@stu) in the Boston SiliconANGLE Media studio offices to talk about how the multi-cloud world changes software spend, and what SoftwareONE is doing to help businesses transition. (* Disclosure below.)
‘You can’t make a decision on what you can’t see’
PyraCloud aims to maximize enterprise cloud and on-premises investments by managing budgets and resource spend. The platform has already been supporting businesses in their transactions, asset management, and reporting and analytics, but its latest enhancements now extend coverage to the financial management piece many companies currently lack.
“If the entitlement is greater than the inventory … then you’ve purchased too much and need to right size your investment. … If the inventory is greater than the entitlement, then they have a compliance issue,” Gersten said. The lack of visibility in SaaS application purchasing across teams is an issue currently plaguing many enterprise orgs, and one SoftwareONE aims to solve. PyraCloud provides budgeting tools that help to streamline these processes through more effective chargebacks, centralized spending, automated invoicing, and markups for turning customer purchasing groups into profit centers.
Through PyraCloud, SoftwareONE aims to save businesses money and ensure appropriate investments by shining a light on inefficient expense management. “You can’t make a decision on what you can’t see,” Gersten said.
Looking ahead, the company is working to take even greater measures in determining where purchases are being made, and ensuring accountability for businesses transitioning their data to the cloud. “Ultimately what we’re trying to do for customers is manage their entire portfolio across the entire lifecycle…whether it be on-premises software, whether it be in the cloud, whether it be hybrid or multi-cloud,” Gersten concluded.
