Security firm Trend Micro Inc. has acquired Montréal, Canada-based Immunio Inc., a startup specializing in web application security, for an undisclosed price.
Founded in 2013, Immunio sells a platform that offers runtime self-protection technology, which protects web apps against application-layer attacks. The platform offers protection services and hardens applications against common attacks targeting typical security weaknesses such as poor authentication and session management, code vulnerabilities, drive-by attacks and cross-site scripting or XXS attacks.
“Technology changes, like cloud computing and container platforms, are enabling faster application development,” Bill McGee, senior vice president and general manager of Hybrid Cloud Security at Trend Micro said in a statement. “Immunio’s runtime application security allows our customers to increase protection against software vulnerabilities within the applications they are building.”
The acquisition means Immunio’s web application security application will be integrated into Trend Micro’s offering in DevSecOps, a method of incorporating security as applications are being written. Trend Micro also announced that it’s enhancing its container-specific security capabilities by adding support for container image scanning, allowing security issues to be identified and resolved prior to production release. The new feature will allow customers to scan images in the container registry so that development teams can fix issues prior to deployment and apply runtime protection capabilities based on findings from the imaging.
“There is a prevailing friction crackling within IT departments when it comes to balancing the speed of the DevOps process with the need to ensure more and better security layers,” a spokesperson for the company told SiliconANGLE. “With Trend Micro’s new capabilities fitting neatly into the DevOps lifecycle, Immunio brings early detection and protection against application vulnerabilities. The result of these new additions are secure, resilient applications and dramatic improvements in run-time operations, whether they are located onsite or in the public cloud.”
Prior to the acquisition, Immunio had raised $7.7 million from five investors: Real Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, BDC IT Venture Fund, White Star Capital, Hoxton Ventures.
For those attending the Amazon Web Services Inc.’s re:Invent cloud conference, Trend Micro will have a booth where it can provide more details on how it’s going to use Immunio’s technology.
