BMC helps AWS see the big picture of enterprise cloud challenges

The growth pace of cloud migration has left some businesses vulnerable to risks as they struggle to prioritize both innovation and security. With the General Data Protection Regulation (which will go into effect for any business with European operations in May 2018) bringing privacy and regulation to the forefront of the big data conversation, enterprises are beginning to seek support in optimizing secure processes.

Software solutions provider BMC Software Inc. has been helping large enterprises keep their environments secure, automated and efficient within their data centers for the past 20 years, according to Daniel Nelson (pictured), area vice president of product management at BMC Software. Through its partnership with Amazon Web Service Inc., the company is now working to bring enterprises into the cloud seamlessly.

“As our customers are transitioning to a multicloud world, everything that they had to do back at the data center, they still have to do in the public cloud. It still has to be compliant; it still has to be secure; it still has to be governed,” Nelson said.

Nelson and his team work with AWS to provide one platform for customers to manage their internal systems while they make the cloud transition. Nelson spoke with  Lisa Martin (@LuccaZara), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Justin Warren (@jpwarren), chief analyst at PivotNine Pty Ltd., during the recent AWS re:Invent event in Las Vegas, Nevada. They discussed the progression of cloud technology and how BMC is working with AWS to support enterprises through their digital transformations. (* Disclosure below.)

Security and speed at scale

BMC’s history of automating processes at scale translates well into the world of cloud computing, allowing the company to offer expertise around re-architecting strategies to accommodate the fast pace of digital revolution, according to Nelson.

“Now that you’re down to minutes, even seconds pushing out code [and] updating your applications … it’s beyond human scale. That’s where things like automation, being able to tie back to your core systems [and] automated governance control really help all of our customers,” Nelson said.

Partnering with AWS allows BMC to seamlessly provide the protective aspects necessary for enterprise as they innovate with the speed enabled by Amazon’s platform. “What AWS does really well is provide … the underlying building blocks of what you need and allow you assemble them very quickly. … What we do very well is keep some guardrails on those building blocks,” Nelson said.

Through BMC, Nelson helps prevent against data breaches to keep customers compliant and protected.

While AWS’ constant innovation drives BMC to consistently improve its offerings for customers, BMC also brings a holistic view to the partnership, helping AWS see challenges from the developer level and up and improve C-suite communication, Nelson explained.

“AWS is one of our strategic partners, so it’s very easy for us to go in to customers together and give that message of: ‘Go fast, but be safe at the same time,’” he said.

As BMC continues to guide customers through their on-premises, cloud and multicloud decisions, Nelson is confident that a partnership with AWS will continue to help transitioning enterprises thrive. “The end person that we’re protecting is the consumer. … Ultimately, that’s the value,” he concluded.
