EBay acquires Terapeak to give sellers better analytics on their sales
Online marketplace eBay Inc. today said it has acquired Terapeak Inc., a Toronto-based data startup that helps sellers make supply and pricing decisions for ecommerce sites such as eBay and Amazon.com.
Founded in 2002, Terapeak’s cloud-based data platform lets sellers track supply, demand and pricing data both historically and in real time. EBay will integrate some of Terapeak’s tools directly into its Seller Hub, giving eBay sellers access to better analytics for their online storefronts.
“Nearly 2 million sellers currently manage their eBay business on Seller Hub,” said Bob Kupbens, vice president of B2C selling at eBay. “Expanding Seller Hub to provide additional capabilities from Terapeak will help our sellers be even more successful and enable them to more effectively manage their businesses on eBay.”
Kupbens added that the integration of Terapeak’s features into Seller Hub, including sales history and performance enhancement opportunities and price guidance and comparisons, will “continue to help eBay’s merchants scale their businesses on eBay.”
Terapeak is one of several acquisitions eBay has made to improve its platform within the last few years. For example, in 2016 it purchased of AI service Expertmaker to clean up its item listings. That same year, eBay also purchased consumer behavior predictor SalesPredict to help boost conversion rights by targeting the right potential customers.
Kevin North, president and chief executive of Terapeak, said that the acquisition “makes so much sense” for both companies and their customers, and Terapeak’s tools are a perfect fit for the ecommerce platform. “Over time Terapeak’s capabilities will become naturally integrated with eBay’s Seller Hub, therefore becoming more robust and providing merchants with a single place to manage and elevate their ecommerce business,” said North.
Terapeak’s employees will remain at their locations in Toronto and Vancouver, but they will now report to either Kupbens or Sunil Rajasekar, eBay’s vice president of seller experience. EBay expects its acquisition of to be completed before the new year. Terms weren’t disclosed.
