AppDynamics accelerates pace of cloud migration in AWS, says CSO

As enterprises move from the early stages of cloud discovery to settling in with new processes and infrastructure, optimizing cloud migration and reporting with the appropriate platform is crucial to long-term success. For businesses working with Amazon Web Services Inc., this process can be streamlined with the help of provider partner, AppDynamics, according to Thomas Wyatt (pictured, left), chief strategy officer at AppDynamics LLC.

“Applications are really becoming the foundation of the modern business, and understanding the performance of those applications, the users, the application, the business metrics themselves is critical, as this really signifies the brand for most companies,” Wyatt said.

Through its partnership with AWS, AppDynamics provides customers a deeper understanding of performance in their new environment as they migrate workloads to Amazon.

Wyatt and Barry Russell (pictured), general manager of the AWS Marketplace and Service Catalog at AWS, spoke with John Furrier (@furrier) and Stu Miniman (@stu), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the AWS re:Invent event in Las Vegas, Nevada. They discussed the details of the AWS and AppDynamics partnership and how working together is promoting innovation for both the companies and their customers. (* Disclosure below.)

Innovating for seller and buyer

Visibility into cloud performance is essential to maximizing the platform for current work and future growth. AppDynamics offers customers that opportunity through instrumentation that provides real-time insights for businesses to take advantage of. “If you know how your application is performing in real time, you take that guesswork out. … Leveling AppDynamics with Amazon really gives you that capability, the best of both worlds,” Wyatt said.

The partnership has been beneficial for customers not only in its potential for innovation, but from a financial perspective as well. Amazon recently launched Seller Private Offers, enabling sellers to streamline the negotiation process with customers and help them negotiate the best terms and price to run software on AWS.

“We’re trying to innovate between both the buyer and seller at all times,” Russell said.

That streamlined functionality extends to the partners themselves. “AppDynamics makes their software available as SaaS [software as a service]. … Then we work with AppDynamics to come up with a specific use case for the workloads that are migrating over,” Russell said. AWS then consults with solution architects to help advise the customer on which third-party software meets those workload needs best.

“The deal sizes are expanding, and largely because there’s a lot of comfort from the end customers at the combination of AppDynamics working closely with AWS. … We’re seeing, on average, our enterprise customers are getting to the Cloud 30 percent faster by using the two solutions together,” Wyatt concluded.
