Rainforest QA lands $25M funding round to expand its human software testing platform

Software testing provider Rainforest QA Inc. is gearing up for expansion after landing a $25 million round of funding.

The Series B round was led by SVB Capital, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners, Sutter Hill Capital, Rincon Ventures and Initialized Capital, bringing the firm’s total funding to $41.2 million to date.

Rainforest QA is one of several up-and-coming companies leveraging an army of human software testers to provide quality assurance for new software. The human testers’ activities are coordinated by special software that uses “an algorithmic system to parallelize testing and input the results into a data pool that can be easily read by the client,” according to a 2015 SiliconANGLE profile of the company.

The company said that when it uses predefined test suites, it can deliver results in as fast as 60 minutes, which is much faster than most software developers can do by themselves.

Rival companies that offer similar testing services include Applause App Quality, Inc.’s uTest, usertesting.com and 99tests Inc. Rainforest QA is hoping to leverage the new funds its obtained to put some distance between it and its rivals. In a statement, the company said it will use the money to accelerate sales and marketing efforts and also to improve the platform to facilitate “continuous delivery” of software updates.

That speed is important because the idea of continuous delivery is becoming more prominent among enterprise software developers, with daily and weekly updates rapidly becoming the norm. But in many cases, enterprise development teams are understaffed, Rainforest QA said, so they have little time to test new updates in the pipeline properly.

“We’ve spent the last five years helping hundreds of companies completely disrupt the old QA model and ship better digital products much faster,” said Rainforest QA Chief Executive Fred Stevens-Smith.

Rainforest QA said it now counts “hundreds of companies” among its customers, with 130 signed up in the past year alone. One of its newest customers is Delivery.com, which facilitates delivery services from local businesses to their customers.

“We rely on Rainforest’s QA solution to help keep our processes running smoothly and efficiently,” said Jay Winters, chief technology officer at Delivery.com. “With Rainforest we have reduced our regression testing time from hours to minutes. This enables us to get code to production faster, freeing up time to focus on new ways to service customers and improve our business.”
