Telcos may be ready to jump on the software-defined, virtualization bandwagon

The market for telco/communication service providers is poised to either jump on the software-defined, virtualization bandwagon or get left in the dust. The coming of speedy 5G wireless networks and demand for data mobile services will likely force telco companies to finally cross the chasm, and Pensa Inc. is more than happy to escort them through the journey.

“We are at a cusp point where this industry is going to fundamentally change,” said Tom Joyce (pictured), chief executive officer of Pensa. “What’s formerly known as telco business is late to the party. It’s almost like that industry is the last domino to fall in this transition to new technology.”

Joyce spoke with Peter Burris (@plburris), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at theCUBE’s studio in Palo Alto, California, to discuss the changing nature of the telecommunications business and how Pensa plans to help with that transition now and in the future. Media consumption drives new technologies

Pensa believes it is in prime position to help the communications service provider industry because the new world of media consumption requires the ability to partition a network, program it remotely, and deliver video-based applications fast and at scale.

“The key thing is you need to be able to program it in software and change it when change is required, and they don’t have that,” Joyce explained. “We automate all of that, and we’re using intelligence to do it.”

Since emerging from stealth mode in October, Pensa has been quite busy executing its software-defined strategy. The company’s core technology — Pensa Maestro — is an enterprise cloud-based platform that allows firms to spin up software environments securely. Earlier this month, the company announced Maestro NFV, software for intelligent automation of network functions virtualization services.

“It’s about building network services that are highly flexible in software that you can deploy on industry standard server technologies,” Joyce said. “We use intelligent automation to make it easy to build those in incredible combinations and complexity.”
