Pepperdata launches new troubleshooting tool to boost application performance

Big data infrastructure management company Pepperdata Inc. is launching a new service it said can help boost the performance of individual software applications.

The company, which sells software for managing and fine-tuning clusters running on Apache Hadoop, Apache Spark and other big-data software frameworks, said its new Application Spotlight tool works by generating recommendations for specific apps that can be implemented to improve performance. The tool also helps to highlight apps that need attention from developers, identifies bottlenecks and provides alerts on items such as failure conditions and resource usage.

With Application Spotlight, developers analyze the inner workings of every application running on their Hadoop and Spark clusters, or else look at specific applications only. The tool also helps them to compare current app runs against previous runs, and provides visualizations on app performance to help with analysis and performance tuning.

According to Pepperdata Chief Executive Ash Munshi, Application Spotlight is all about providing more convenience for developers, putting all of the insights and data about their apps into one place.

“Application Spotlight enables developers to be better tenants in multi-tenant clusters by showing them how to write optimal jobs and more efficiently use their queue and cluster resources with practical, innovative application performance management solutions,” Munshi said.

Pepperdata makes some big claims about Application Spotlight, saying it can help developers troubleshoot performance issues 10 times faster than traditional methods. In addition, the company reckons it can help to increase cluster capacity usage by 30 to 50 percent, without adding any new hardware.

The company will demonstrate Application Spotlight at the Strata Data Conference in San Jose March 6-8.
