Densify’s cloud optimization tool Cloe uses machine learning to cut costs

Cloud infrastructure optimization company Densify Monday announced a new artificial intelligence service that aims to reduce enterprises’ cloud costs to the absolute minimum.

The new service is called the Cloud Learning Optimization Engine, or Cloe, and uses machine learning to analyze cloud workloads and determine their resource requirements and what actions users can take to save on costs.

With Cloe, Densify, formally known as Cirba Inc., is trying to provide enterprises with more visibility into their cloud workloads. The company pointed out that in many cases its customers don’t actually know what resources, things such as processor, memory and storage, that their applications need to run optimally. As a result, anyone who’s paying by the hour for compute capacity could be wasting money on resources they don’t need.

Cloe works by analyzing the needs of each workload, then suggests ways customers can optimize their infrastructure by shutting down unnecessary instances and recommending which kind of virtual machine to use.

“If you went to AWS re:Invent, for example, the keynote was an hourlong set of announcements about new services. So the question begs: ‘That’s great, but is it more expensive, is it more efficient, should I use it or shouldn’t I use it?’” Densify Chief Executive Gerry Smith told eWeek. “Those are the answers that Cloe gives.”

Densify makes some big claims about the savings it can help its customers achieve. It reckons some of its users have saved more than 80 percent on their cloud infrastructure bills, while major customers like the Bank of America and IBM Corp. save an average of 40 percent.

Another advantage of Densify is that it’s platform-agnostic, meaning it works on all major clouds, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, IBM Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Customers can compare these environments to see which can handle their workloads most efficiently.

Perhaps the best thing about Cloe is that it enables customers to make instant savings, because the service can use existing log data to begin its optimizations as soon as it’s plugged in.

Lastly, Cloe can also help customers with on-premises workloads that are considering a move to the cloud. The service can analyze workloads running in private data centers and recommend the most suitable cloud environment for each one.
