BIG DATA

Big data’s next chapter: Machine learning and automation explored at BigData SV 2018

Data has been the driving force behind digital transformation, but will its benefits prove to be worth the cost and effort of regulatory compliance measures and top-down process overhauls?

Looking to answer these and other questions, SiliconANGLE is hosting BigData SV 2018 in San Jose, California, with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)

At BigData SV 2018, theCUBE will explore the current landscape of big data, as well as the data management trends and developments that are poised to change the industry over the coming years. TheCUBE host and SiliconANGLE founder John Furrier predicted the biggest issue to come down the big data pipeline will be around sovereignty, in light of calls for greater security, including the European Union’s data protection mandate General Data Protection Regulation.

“People are going to fake it till they make it to avoid the fines, but the deeper discussion is going to be the technical analysis of how to scale that up throughout the global infrastructure, cloud selection, [and] application development,” Furrier said.

With the new regulations imposed by GDPR, companies are being forced to reevaluate data management operations from the infrastructure level. However, this limitation actually has the potential to give businesses a competitive edge if they can find the appropriate partners to assist them in securing data for GDPR compliance.

The mandate’s strict regulations are currently one of few industry standards for this new and rapidly changing tech landscape, and improvements in big data processes hinge on the development of more. As new security-centric businesses emerge to take up the labor of regulatory compliance, Furrier places his data confidence in the future of blockchain technology.

“As the role of data becomes more empowered by the user, you’re going to see people deploying blockchain-like technology to provide sovereignty, whether that’s … power to the users, to the company, or to the geopolitical landscape with cloud and application development,” he said. Blockchain’s utility as an ownership and authority management system is the next step in untangling big data for enterprise and reducing overall elapsed time of solutions in the data center, according to Furrier.

As hype has grown around a data-centric approach, companies scrambling to implement big data processes have been curbed by the volume of data and other roadblocks, as well as that of GDPR. To ensure processes scale in tandem with the exponential growth of digital and dark data, companies are turning increasingly to machine learning and artificial intelligence systems. Tech leaders such as Google, IBM, Amazon Web Services and others are investing heavily in automation of both the data engine and feature engineering to usher in a new era of efficiency in productizing big data.

The potential for big data is still largely untapped, and current infrastructure, operations and business culture have a long way to go to be capable of efficiently working through today’s data challenges. A recent survey showed data exploration as a top initiative for enterprise’ in 2018, as companies begin to view big data as inextricably linked with the success of their businesses rather than a separate endeavor. While big data efforts have been historically tech-centric, the survey points to a future focused more on tailored solutions than the range of possibilities company’s have struggled to manage over the last few years.

While challenges around efficiency, compliance and culture remain, the shifts of digital transformation are imminent for every industry. At BigData SV 2018, theCUBE will delve into the complexities of this revolutionary trend.

Speakers and guests at BigData SV 2018 include Jacque Istok, chief technology officer at Pivotal Software Inc.; Tendu Yogurtcu, chief technology officer at Syncsort Inc.; and Jagane Sundar, chief technology officer at WANdisco Inc.
