BIG DATA

How this SaaS platform unifies on-prem and cloud data centers

Through the growth of virtual systems, cloud applications and smart technology, data has become one of the biggest assets and greatest risks to enterprise. The rapid expansion of infrastructure built to accommodate new data has led to unstable systems in many businesses, creating inefficient processes at best and dangerously unsecured personal information at worst. While the traditional data industry remains focused primarily on options for storage, new companies are emerging with the mission of improving processes and security around enterprise data management.

“The real issue is how [to] automate, orchestrate and secure access to the data. The keeper of data can be on-premises [or] public clouds, but really this data control plane that actually manages, secures and provides access to this data is the critical piece. That’s Rubrik’s focus,” said Bipul Sinha (pictured), co-founder and chief executive officer of Rubrik Inc. With the release of its new platform Polaris, Rubrik aims to provide a single platform for all data compliance, governance and security needs.

Sinha spoke with John Furrier, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at theCUBE’s studio in Palo Alto, California, to discuss the current state of enterprise data management and how Rubrik’s latest release intends to transform the industry.

‘The new standard for data management’

In the four years since it was founded, Rubrik has grown rapidly by delivering on the data demands of a growing market, according to Sinha. “When we started the company we saw a market need around simplification, cloud enablement, and automating and orchestrating backup recovery archive across on-premises and the cloud,” he said.

Observing customer challenges around collaboration through siloed data stacks and inefficient cloud security, the company set out to shift data storage management to prioritize governance and access. “That’s where … businesses can realize … the power …  from their data, because they can actually collaborate and give more access … to their own users without worrying about data falling into the wrong hands,” Sinha said.

The company just announced its latest initiative in improving data management, Polaris. The platform provides a single system of record with APIs where Rubrik can deliver data management applications for control, governance, compliance and security across applications both on-prem and in the cloud.

Through the global orchestration offered by Polaris, Rubrik hopes to differentiate its value as a data management service by helping enterprises securely utilize the flexibility offered by the cloud. “The vision of Rubrik is simplicity at scale with cloud-enabled, single software fabric across … multiple data centers,” Sinha said.

With a transparent, collaborative culture at the core of its strategy, Rubrik seems poised for the progress Sinha predicts the company to make over the coming decades. “Our goal is to build Rubrik into the next … iconic company, and we are building a … team that will have the firepower and talent to help [us] become the standard for data management,” he concluded.
