How Nutanix wants to simplify building hybrid clouds

Enterprise cloud computing is a complex, heterogeneous world, and the trend toward more disaggregated workloads makes it harder to keep control over data and applications. Not only is the technology changing, but the role of internet protocol and infrastructure professionals has also become fluid and dynamic, throwing another variable into an already chaotic field.

Simplifying the complexity of entering the hybrid cloud for enterprise is the mission of cloud computing software company Nutanix, Inc.

“Enterprise cloud is about how do you take the ingredients of hyperconverged infrastructure, take the ingredients of automation and management over these different workloads, across these different environments, and do so in a way that makes the complexity of infrastructure and multiple cloud management, make that all invisible,” said Ben Gibson (pictured), Nutanix’s chief marketing officer.

Stu Miniman (@stu), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, gets to know Natanix’s new CMO during a CUBE Conversation at theCUBE’s studio in Palo Alto, California, where the two discuss Gibson’s background, Nutanix’s new narrative, and what to expect at the upcoming Nutanix .NEXT event.

A marketing veteran, Gibson started his career in the networking industry, working at Cisco Systems Inc. and Aruba Networks Inc. before moving into enterprise cloud. He advised Nutanix’s previous CMO, Howard Ting, giving Gibson a background in the company and making him a prime candidate to take control of the Nutanix brand image.

Nutanix writes its own cloud narrative

Nutanix is writing a new narrative expanding the brand and taking the complexity out of building customized, specific data centers and giving the customer the “freedom to run the application or the workload that they’ve always wanted to run where they choose to run it,” Gibson said. “A lot of our value proposition because of all the complexity we’ve taken out of the equation is we give our customers their weekends back.”

Nutanix recently acquired cloud solutions provider Minjar Inc. Minjar is known for its intelligent Botmetric cloud management solution that gives operational insights, automates repetitive tasks, and optimizes cloud spend. “[Botmetric is] going to be integrated into our broader software platform that allows customers to be able to assess on a real-time basis what’s the right cloud platform for a particular workload from a costing perspective, from a reliability standpoint,” Gibson said.

Asked about plans for the upcoming Nutanix .NEXT in New Orleans this May, Gibson applauds the intensity and loyalty of the Nutanix customer base. “They’re believers, and they’re coming to the show to learn from us, to connect with each other, and really to accelerate some of their plans on how they continue to innovate,” he stated.

Speaking at .NEXT will be author and research professor Brené Brown, who will discuss the importance of being vulnerable and taking career risks, along with celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, who Gibson said “is gonna bring his special kind of flair to this show.”
