Couchbase adds new features to help developers tame mobile data at the edge

Nonrelational database company Couchbase Inc. is updating its mobile data management platform with new capabilities that should make it easier for developers to build portable versions of business-critical applications.

The company said Couchbase Mobile 2.0 is a “full-stack data platform for securely managing and syncing data from edge devices back to the cloud.” More specifically, Couchbase Mobile is a collection of three services.

The first is Couchbase Lite, which is a lightweight embedded NoSQL database that can transmit information to a remote server at the cost of increased latency. It packs many of the most important features found in Couchbase Server, in addition to conflict resolution capabilities that are important for an applications that have only an intermittent connection to the cloud.

The second ingredient is the Couchbase Server, which is the company’s flagship NoSQL database that manages and stores data in cloud-based servers. And the third, the Sync Gateway, is middleware that’s designed to synchronize data between those two services. Together, the three services enable developers to build applications for mobile devices with no compromise on performance or reliability.

With Couchbase Mobile 2.0, developers are getting their hands on some nifty new features that should help to make their jobs that much easier. These include a newly simplified application programming interface that the company said eliminates the steep learning curve for using its platform.

A second new feature is N1QL queries for mobile applications, which enables developers to carry out full-text searches on JSON documents stored in Couchbase Lite. That way,  mobile developers can bring to their mobile apps what search engines such as Google and Bing do with HTML on the web, the company said.

Finally, Couchbase Mobile is gaining automatic conflict resolution capabilities that mean applications no longer need to handle conflicts out-of-band and keep track of the revisions it makes.

Couchbase Mobile 2.0 will become generally available in April.
