Future-proofing storage with Dell’s new PowerMax

Intelligent storage is a new trend for Dell Technologies Inc.’s family of technologies, where data scientists are building algorithms for data insight and, in the process, reducing lag time and creating overall better business decisions. With contributions from technology acquired through the Dell EMC merger, the old VMAX line of storage appliances is being upgraded and future-proofed with artificial intelligence and machine learning in mind.

Unleashing the value of data storage means using technology that understands application hinting and pattern recognition. With Dell’s launch of PowerMax, the product is on the path to the future of enterprise storage — with the “the fastest, most intelligent and resilient storage market today,” according to Jeff Boudreau (pictured), president and general manager of storage at Dell EMC. PowerMax runs 10 million input/output operations per second on an 8,000, and 150 gigabytes for bandwidth, he added.

“It has so much horsepower behind it,” Boudreau said. “The reaction has been fantastic. Last year we talked about autonomous storage. This is really the first step to truly autonomous storage.”

Boudreau spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu) and John Walls (@JohnWalls21),  co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at the Dell Technologies World 2018 event in Las Vegas. They discussed the benefits to EMC’s innovative storage products. (* Disclosure below.)

Linking AI to storage

Artificial intelligence integrated with data storage is a new territory for many companies. By 2030, the markets for the “internet of things” and machine learning will explode, and these trends will continue to drive computing architecture, according to Boudreau.

When his teams build storage solutions, there is a lot of prototyping and drafts on paper before the system’s architecture is put to work. Boudreau’s teams are modeling for today but also trying to look at how storage technology can evolve and grow with the rise of machine learning and artificial intelligence applications.

Dell’s efforts have pushed the envelope for extracting the value in the data to provide its customers useful insights, Boudreau added.

“To me, data is the precious metal; it’s the crucial asset right? You can debate if it’s the most important asset for our customers, between their people and their data, you can debate. For me, if you step back, data is the most crucial asset they have, so you’ve got to treat it as such,” he concluded.
