Prepping for the bubble burst, Pure Storage upgrades with AI tech, key partners at Accelerate 2018

With unicorn status, all-flash storage array maker Pure Storage Inc. has quite a reputation to maintain since launching its initial public offering in 2015. In a market where it’s increasingly difficult for a company to operate as a completely independent storage company, what’s the benefit of remaining independent in the age of hyperconvergence? And what will Pure Storage do once the Silicon Valley bubble bursts?

Looking to answer these and other questions, SiliconANGLE is at Pure Storage Accelerate 2018, currently underway in San Francisco, California. Watch live for exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE, on Wednesday, May 23. (* Disclosure below.)

Surpassing $1 billion in revenue last year, Pure Storage appears quite successful with a market cap hovering around $5 billion, according to Wikibon Chief Analyst Dave Vellante (@dvellante) (Wikibon is owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE). With rapid growth boosted by its IPO, Pure Storage had also been “losing money for years in an effort to drive growth,” said Vellante, making for a classic case of riding the market boom. Wall Street according to Vellante has been rewarding growth for tech companies ahead of profits.

Heavily vested in scaling its market reach, Pure Storage is spending to be an original equipment manufacturer for software as a service providers and storage providers to the cloud, as well as on premises data center customers. Pure’s strategy according to Vellante is to simplify the storage appliance lifecycle experience and extend integration opportunities with partners through application programming interfaces (APIs). This is particularly important according to Vellante for providers competing with the likes of Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, IBM and Oracle, because it allows them to simplify their infrastructure and focus on adding value elsewhere in their stacks.

To this end, Pure Storage reported growth throughout its channel sales during its earnings call on Monday, highlighting a new partnership with high-performance computing developer Nvidia Corp. The two companies in March unveiled AIRI, a new offering for artificial intelligence and machine learning, combining Pure Storage’s FlashBlade all-flash storage array for unstructured data, alongside the Nvidia DGX-1 graphics processing unit-based platform for AI, and new software from Pure Storage for scaling this system to up to four nodes.

“We were ahead of the market in all-flash,” said Pure Storage Chief Executive Officer Charles Giancarlo during the earnings call. “We were ahead of the market with [non-volatile memory express]. And we’re ahead of the market with AI.”

Giancarlo used the opportunity to preview new services launching at this week’s Accelerate conference. Underlying several of the upgrades to be announced is Pure Storage’s new data-centric architecture umbrella, designed for customers to construct their data centers to be more data-service oriented with agile and quick deployments for software applications and analytics.

Pure Storage is also expected to reveal more products specific to AI, with Giancarlo noting a spike in customer interest for intelligent machine analytics.

Not having forgotten its roots in flash storage technology and its primary market appeal, Pure Storage will be unveiling upgrades to its storage systems for more dense, faster and cost-effective solutions, according to Giancarlo.

Pure Storage’s emphasis on blade storage could ultimately help the company in its efforts to scale beyond its core market “because they can participate with that more effectively in the uni-group future,” said Wikibon Analyst David Floyer. “Pure Storage knows the bubble will burst at some stage — they are growing very fast. Overall the SaaS market is declining, but flash is growing.”

Speakers at Pure accelerate 2018 include Charlie Giancarlo, CEO of Pure Storage; Dr. Kate Darling, a research specialist at the MIT Media Lab and a fellow at the Harvard Berkman Center; David Hatfield (a.k.a. “Hat”), president at Pure Storage; Jim McHugh, vice president and general manager at Nvidia; Matt Kixmoeller, vice president of product and solutions marketing at Pure Storage; and Matthey “Jez” Humble, co-author of Accelerate.
