Database startup Crate.io lands $11M funding round

Crate.io Inc., developer of the specialized CrateDB database for real-time machine data and “internet of things” applications, said today it has raised $11 million in a funding round led by Zetta Venture Partners and Deutsche Invest Equity.

In addition to the Series A round, the company is launching version 3.0 of CrateDB, together with the initial release of its new Crate Machine Data Platform, which is designed to help manage data for IoT systems.

The CrateDB database, launched in 2016, is a Structured Query Language database. But it differs quite radically from other SQL databases in that it operates as a cluster of containers, with the ability to redistribute data as it changes the size of its clusters. Those abilities make it an ideal database for analyzing machine data on container platforms such as Docker, Kubernetes and Apache Mesos, the company said.

Interestingly, instead of pitching CrateDB as a rival to other SQL databases, Crate.IO actually said it’s a better alternative to NoSQL databases such as Apache Cassandra thanks to its ability to handle complex queries in real time.

The new enhancements with version 3.0 include something called “distributed hash join algorithms,” which Crate.IO said in its tests can speed up query performance for large data sets by 20 to 100 times. The new version also comes with support for virtual tables and subqueries, as well as role-based access control features.

As for the new Crate Machine Data Platform, the company said this is a response to a rush by “progressive companies” to create new systems capable of harnessing data from IoT devices and installations such as sensors, smart cars and factories.

“These systems ingest streams of sensor data, analyze it and then trigger alerts or actions in order to optimize the behavior of “things,” Crate.IO officials said. “They can change factory machine settings to improve output, direct failing vehicles off the road to increase safety, or disable access credentials to reduce fraud.”

The Crate Machine Data Platform is designed to help companies build these systems. Essentially, it serves as their “plumbing,” handling all of the operational requirements for the data fed into these IoT systems.

Crate.IO Chief Executive Officer Christian Lutz told SiliconANGLE that following the latest round of funding, the company intends to expand its engineering and customer success teams working on CrateDB and the new Crate Machine Data Platform. “We will also invest on the commercial side to continue growing awareness and adoption of Crate.io machine data management products,” Lutz said.

The platform is available now as a fully managed offering on Microsoft Azure, or as an on-premises solution.
