Google launches Rewarded Products to help developers earn on their apps
Google LLC is trying to make it easier for Android developers to monetize application users with a new Google Play service it’s calling “Rewarded Products.”
The service, introduced today, enables developers to offer perks for app users such as in-game content or currency in exchange for viewing video advertisements. In a post on the Android Developer’s blog, Google Play product manager Patrick Davis said Rewarded Products is powered by the company’s AdMob technology, which gives developers access to a wide range of advertiser content.
Developers only need to make a few additional application programming interface calls in order to add Rewarded Products to their apps. Currently available in a beta test, the service can be accessed via the Google Play Console, Davis said.
For example, this clip could be shown to gamers in between levels, giving them a chance to win extra prizes or increase their scores:
Davis said Rewarded Products gives users “more choice in how they experience the app or game” and should be “an effective way to monetize non-paying users.”
Rewarded Products should help Google squeeze a bit more revenue from its advertisers. Developers also win as they gain a new way to roll out an income stream. Users benefit too, gaining additional perks they’d otherwise have to pay for.
