ZF Group’s digital shift: Embracing cloud-based fleet management systems

Fleet management systems are key to a comprehensive solution that integrates and manages the movements of all vehicles and roads.

ZF Group, a major automotive supplier, is in the process of transitioning into a digital business. Its focus is on fleet management systems and the challenges of moving from mainframes to cloud-based services, according to Hjalmar Van Raemdonck (pictured), vice president, SCALAR, at ZF Group.

“We had a fleet management system, which is now one of the top systems in Europe. And true to mergers and acquisitions, we ended up with ZF,” Van Raemdonck said. “One of the reasons why ZF wanted to have … this digital unit is because … they want to have a third value stream, which is digital.”

Van Raemdonck spoke with theCUBE Research’s chief analyst Dave Vellante at the MongoDB.local NYC event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed ZF Group transitioning into a digital business and using MongoDB Atlas in the cloud for their platform SCALAR to optimize road transport and prepare for the future of autonomous vehicles. Advancements in fleet management systems

ZF Group transitioned to using MongoDB Atlas in the cloud for its SCALAR platform. The platform’s feature richness, ease of use and customer centricity contribute to the enhanced fleet management capabilities offered by SCALAR, according to Van Raemdonck.

Europe leads in privacy and regulation, which is why platforms were merged for compliance and shifted to microservices in the cloud, using MongoDB Atlas, explained Van Raemdonck. Artificial intelligence is being used to scale fleet dispatching in European fleets by utilizing live data with MongoDB, allowing for real-time decision-making and efficiency improvements.

“If you take the context of a European fleet, you’re able to do, depending on the sector, eight to 12 drivers assets, and we want to scale that to 20, 30, 50, 100, unlimited,” Van Raemdonck said. “That’s only possible if you’re going to use the technology of AI on live data. So, I’m not talking about AI on big data. I’m talking about AI on live data, and that’s exactly where we’re looking at with MongoDB.”
