Australian startup SpatialAI raises $3.4M to advance AI in architecture and construction

New Australian generative artificial intelligence startup SpatialGPT.AI Pty. Ltd. has raised AU$5.1 million ($3.4 million) in seed funding to redefine spatial environments across the architecture, construction, education, healthcare and retail sectors.

Announced today, the funding came from InnovateGPT Pty. Ltd., a company founded by George Stavrakakis and Rupert Walsh, both veteran Microsoft Australia employees. SpatialGPT’s founding Chief Executive Robert Marolda is also an ex-Microsoft Corp. and VMware senior employee who played a key role in launching Microsoft’s E5 Security in Australia.

With Microsoft running through its blood, it comes as no surprise that SpatialGPT is focused on building AI-powered solutions using Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and Microsoft Copilot, along with Apple Vision Pro, JigSpace and other technologies. The focus of what it’s building is helping organizations transform how spaces are constructed, managed and used.

SpatialGPT’s technology aims to boost operational efficiency by enhancing precision, minimizing delays and optimizing costs. The tech also includes virtual reality walkthroughs for early design decisions, real-time progress tracking with automated reporting and advanced data collection for risk mitigation and insurance claims.

The company is initially focusing on billion-dollar projects in the construction industry with a suite of AI-powered copilot solutions to optimize construction workflows. Over time, SpatialGPT plans to expand into education, healthcare and retail to reimagine how spatial environments in these industries are used.

The “decision to focus first on the construction sector stems from recognizing its pivotal role in the economy and the substantial potential for positive change within this key area,” said InnovateGPT Chief Executive Stavrakakis. “It’s clear that this sector not only plays a crucial role in our economy but also presents a ripe landscape for innovative advancements.”

With Microsoft key to the offering, leadership and investors, SpatialGPT has also partnered with the company. “By using our technologies, such as Azure OpenAI Service and Copilot, this collaboration will enable advancements in spatial environments that were once considered beyond reach,” said Matt Furse, software-as-a-service partnership lead at Microsoft Australia and New Zealand.
