The cloud, a la carte (kind of). Amazon is expanding its EC2 hosted solutions, addressing a growing demand around smaller rate plans for smaller applications. The new service, called Micro Instances, come shortly after Amazon announced decreased pricing for its EC2 server.
Micro Instances provide 613 MB of memory and support 32-bit and 64-bit platforms on both Linux and Windows. Micro instance pricing for On-Demand instances starts at $0.02 per hour for Linux and $0.03 per hour for Windows. Amazon is rolling out Micro Instances in all regions today.
From Amazon’s blog,
“Micro Instances (t1.micro) provide a small amount of consistent CPU resources and allow you to burst CPU capacity when additional cycles are available. They are available now in all Regions. You can buy Reserved Micro Instances and you can acquire Micro Instances on the Spot Market. Interestingly enough, they are available in both 32 and 64 bit flavors, both with 613 MB of RAM. The Micro Instances have no local, ephemeral storage, so you’ll need to Boot from EBS.”
The offerings keep Amazon competitive in the crowding cloud space, with established companies and startups alike seeking their own competitive edge. Amazon’s hosted solutions have helped drive this economy, enabling countless developers to launch products in a more cost effective manner. Micro Instances also speaks to the rise of application development, mirroring the trends we’re seeing around the business and monetization of virtualization. Get more details here.
