Amazon Selling Diapers on Facebook. Sh*tty or Smart?

The latest addition to the list of companies who use Facebook shopping capabilities is Procter and Gamble via the Pampers fan page.  Purchases will be powered by mega-retailer Amazon. P&G brings shopping to people’s favorite environment and sold 1000 packs in less than hour. Other P&G products are also available on Facebook including Tide, Oral B and Pantene to name a few.  It’s also been a way for Amazon to deepen its integration with Facebook, which showed tell-tale signs of this with its incorporation of Like buttons and shared preferences for consumer products.

“The launch of the Facebook e-commerce capabilities via the Pampers fan page presents another example of how Pampers strives to be there for parents where they live, work and play – in this case, at one of their favorite online communities,” said Jodi Allen, vice president of North America Baby Care at Procter & Gamble. “We are so thrilled to have such a dynamic, active community on our Facebook page, and want to find ways to provide benefits to our most loyal fans. Plus, we are also excited to be the first P&G brand to launch these resources and are looking forward to rolling this out to other brand Facebook pages in the future.”

With 350,000 fans on their Facebook fan page, Procter and Gamble will also extend this partnership to more brands in the coming months. Amazon powers Facebook shopping capabilities, embedding people’s favorite online shopping medium into their favorite social network. This also proves that Facebook is becoming a powerful social portal, continuing pursuit to being available on all mobile devices. Openness, as termed by Facebook, is the ability of being accessible from “anywhere possible.”

The announcement comes on the heels of another precedent for Facebook, surpassing Yahoo in terms of video views.  This puts Facebook at the number 2 spot, right behind YouTube.  Becoming a multimedia portal for Facebook is just one part of the equation, as it looks to become a commerce portal as well.  So far, much of the integration to this end has been in conjunction with Amazon.  It’s beneficial on both ends, as Amazon gets access to the large social network for improving its recommendations and outreach tactics as well.  Expect to see more deals like this taking place across Facebook, Twitter and Google outlets, social or otherwise.
