Apple Plans CDMA iPhone to be Carried by Verizon

It looks like Verizon subscribers may soon be able to use iPhones with their service and those who only use AT&T for their iPhone coverage may be able to jump ship. Apple has announced plans to start production on CDMA smartphones in their flagship line that will allow users to connect to Verizon. According to the Wall Street Journal: this should get interesting,

Apple Inc. plans to begin mass producing a new iPhone by the end of 2010 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the smartphone early next year, said people briefed by Apple.

The new iPhone would be similar in design to the iPhone 4 currently sold by AT&T Inc. but would be based on an alternative wireless technology called CDMA used by Verizon, these people said. The phone, for which Qualcomm Inc. is providing a key chip, is expected to be released in the first quarter of next year, according to the same people.

Qualcomm have been very big in the wireless communications industry for a while now and their chips are found in a lot of CDMA phones. We can probably expect a very solid product to work within Apple’s already magnificently selling iPhone line.

Further information on the release plans have not been discovered yet as not Apple, Verizon, nor Qualcomm have chosen to elaborate.

Looks like we’ll just have to wait for the end of 2010 and see.
