HP’s New Product Launch Edges out IBM, Cisco

In a dryly worded press release today, HP has announced a new business strategy that will tap into cloud-storage and -computing for high end projects with big business and government. The offering, packaged as “Instant-On Enterprise” will provide a whole series of solutions that will leverage cloud-computing alongside giant infrastructures along four pillars: applications, infrastructure, security, and information flow.

“It takes a special kind of enterprise to close the expectation gap between what customers and citizens expect and what the enterprise can deliver,” said Thomas E. Hogan, executive vice president, Enterprise Sales, Marketing and Strategy, HP. “The Instant-On Enterprise delivers differentiated competitive advantage, serving customers, employees, partners and citizens with whatever they want and need, instantly – only HP has the solutions to help organizations become Instant-On Enterprises.”

Needless to say, HP’s rivals—including technology corporation IBM—are now watching HP for their next move. According to Forbes, this development is certainly HP’s attempt to outflank their competitors and snatch up more of the market,

The services group, picked up when HP bought consultant EDS, is involved in a business to update the world’s older corporate software – a huge amount of stuff – for a more flexible and automated data center. HP’s labs researchers contributed to converging server, storage, networking and management resources. Security software, another early push, comes from integrating software acquisitions like ArcSight and Fortify. The management software for cloud services is a joint effort between HP’s older software and acquisitions like Mercury Interactive.

So we’re starting to see the big picture of HP’s previous acquisitions and how they expect to integrate them into this new marketing plan. And right now HP is pushing their new plan mostly through marketing venues—a huge push through the sales force, numerous lectures and presentations at conventions, and a giant digital campaign of videos and websites.

The Forbes article mentions that the Instant-On Enterprise venture also came a little bit later than HP intended as it’s the brainchild of ex-CEO Mark Hurd—who resigned amid an office-affair scandal—and the responsibility for that project now lands squarely on Leo Apotheker, new CEO of HP, former CEO of SAP. So far his strategy seems to be working, generating a lot of positive review from the public, but the project itself and HP’s eventual destination are still not as visible as they should be.

We’ll probably be seeing more about this as it unfolds, so stay tuned.
