Nielsen says YouTube is the Best Mobile Internet Video Channel

As December 31 approaches, so comes the year-end analysis reports. This time we have one from Nielsen about Mobile TV. In their Top 10 Mobile Internet Video Channels listing YouTube wins the race hands down. Second in rank was Fox, followed by Comedy Central, ESPN, MTV, ABC, CBS, AdultSwim, NBC, and the Discovery Channel in respective order of rank.

YouTube has started a new phenomenon across the globe. This free video upload platform owned by Google has allowed many to foster and showoff their creativity. You can find anything to everything on this site, from home videos to makeup tutorials, to video reviews, to video travelogues to what not.

Recently, mobile phones have increased multitudes in functionality and features. This has allowed to not only make better videos but also upload or stream them online very easily. So, the phenomenon that we call Mobile TV is created. YouTube just tapped on their already mega huge popularity as an online video site to capture the top spot in Mobile TV sector.

Following is an interesting implication drawn from this rating. You can read the full article here.

This counts as an important victory for Google.  The search giant of course wants  many people to visit its sites as possible, and that may go double for YouTube, considering the $1.65 billion Google paid for the site. Then there’s the advertising angle to consider.  Google’s been making a real effort to present YouTube as a place where everything from small businesses to mainstream brands can get their message across, and this win could reinforce that idea and help bring in revenue.

The fact that Nielsen chose Mobile TV trends among other things in their Top Trends of 2010 Report goes to show the growing importance of Mobile TV. This importance has been realized quite well by major industry players as well. We see various ventures tapping on this consumer trend, like, Mobile Content Venture rolling out Mobile TV Service and launches of Apps for Mobile TV. The popularity of Mobile TV is not limited by geography. The market need around the globe for Mobile TV has triggered companies like DoCoMo to start projects to ensure global reach. Seems like this trend is here to stay.
