The runaway success of Legend of Zelda series lives on, and today marks its 25th anniversary. Amidst the unprecedented victory of games like Farmville of the sensational Zynga that anchors the gaming segment of Facebook, Nintendo’s old classics are still influential.
On February 21st of 1986, videogame designer and storyteller, Shigeru Miyamoto turned his fantasies into something more perceivable and fun, marking the birth of the classic game, the Legend of Zelda. For those who are not aware, the same guy was also responsible for the smash hit Mario, an Italian plumber who loves collecting coins. Who can forget the craze around video games, subjected to saving the Princess, battling enemy kings and garnering a hundred lives?
Today, both are revived via mobile gaming. Super Mario Bros can now be customized for mobile play, and some versions even have level editors. And yes, you can now create your own Mario Indie Game and choose from famed characters like Luigi, Toad, Peach or link it from Zelda. For those who are looking for the original steam, no worries, there are themed levels that can lift characters and throw vegetables at them at this Super Mario revival. Of course, the celebrator also has its own version of the “create your own” game. Revisit your old-school love for games and craft custom quests and adventures for your Zelda classic. The editor goes by the name ZQuest, which has a very simple drag and drop interface.
As they say, these games are timeless. So, whether this mobile gaming world is slowly seeing the rise of animes, taking bold and big steps forward (especially with Android) to becoming billion dollar industry or driving economies here and there, Zelda and Mario will always be a part of every generation.
Happy Birthday, Zelda!
