McAfee Security Buy Ushers Intel Into New Era

Intel announced it has completed the acquisition of security giant McAfee; a $7.68 billion all cash deal announced in last August. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel, McAfee will continue to develop and sell security offerings under its brand. McAfee will report to Intel’s Software and Services Group, which is led by Intel senior VP and general manager Renee James.

“McAfee will continue developing and selling security products and services under its own brand. Intel and McAfee plan to bring the first fruits of their strategic partnership to market later this year, with the intent of tackling security and the pervasive nature of computing threats in an entirely new way.”

In Intel’s release, James emphasizes mobile security as a main bulletin in Intel’s security to-do list. This is no wonder, considering the sheer magnitude and demand circling the ever-accelerating mobile security market.

Recent developments from the mobile security space include the launch of Enterproid, which won $150,000 at the DEMO conference today by securing the number one spot in the competition. Arriving shortly after the unveiling of VMware’s Android virtualization platform, Enterproid enables business users to maintain separate personal and professional profiles on a single phone, with a very profound emphasis on security. The offering is currently available for Android phones and tablets for free, but is expected to adopt a subscription model and hit iOS and WP7 sometime in the future.

The demand around security is especially evident among users of the open-source Android, a platform especially vulnerable to cyber attacks. The most recent example of this is the Android Pjapps Trojan and the SW.SecurePhone and SW.Qieting spyware programs. The last two were detected by mobile solutions provider NetQin Mobile, and the discovery of Android.Pjapps was reported by CRN.
