OpenStack Grows Some More: rPath Adds Support

The open source cloud is beginning to pick up steam, as did in a number of other areas in cloud tech, and today yet another cloud service provider joined the movement. rPath, a provider of software system construction, deployment, configuration and maintenance automation IT-as-a-Service for physical, virtual and cloud environment, announced it has jumped on the OpenStack trend.

OpenStack is Rackspace and NASA’s joint open cloud OS project, which is already supported by dozens of major companies. And, now rPath announced that its newly launched flagship product, rPath X6, now supports OpenStack, as well as VMware vCloud Director.

“rPath, the service factory for on-demand IT, today announced that rPath X6, its newly-launched flagship product, now supports OpenStack™ and VMware vCloud™ Director for private and hybrid cloud computing environments.”

rPath X6 allows users to “visually” construct new systems, generate images and implement updates all throughout the software and business services lifecycle. rPath, had yet another update recently, when it added a drag-and-drop interface to its newly released software stack building system. Still, OpenStack had even bigger news a few days ago, when Dell, Equinix and Rackspace (who may be acquired in the foreseeable future, according to some rumors) launched a demo version of the environment aimed to be used to test cloud-based OpenStack apps. The offering is targeting enterprises and service providers, but OpenStack is certainly not the only open-source cloud offering targeting this audience.

Another example is Gluster, which recently announced that its open source cloud storage platform is being used to power Sweden’s first IaaS platform, City Cloud, which already managed to gain 500 corporate customers after being in beta for over a year. Moreover, Cloud.com recently made a similar announcement, and now its open source IaaS platform, CloudStack, is used by Korea’s largest landline operator to power the KT ucloud public cloud Infrastructure-as-a-service offering.
