

Hewlett-Packard is going through a hardware-to-software transformation under head Leo Apotheker, who has been serving as chief executive for less than a year. The company needs to tackle a number of factors if it wants to be successful with its massive venture, including the need to further grow and develop its capitalization of the software market. HP also needs to find a course when it comes to storage and emerging big data markets, and analyst firm Wikibon made an infographic on the company’s past, present and foreseeable future encompassing all these factors.
Hewlett-Packard has a hefty, multi-billion acquisition portfolio including EDS, Palm, 3COM and 3PAR. All these buyouts greatly contributed to Hewlett-Packard’s position in IT. The company holds the largest share of both printer and server markets, 41 percent and 37 percent respectively. Going into specifics, HP is the biggest player in the blade server and storage markets, and holds a spot in the top 3 in the external storage and network industries.
Overall, Hewlett-Packard runs a massive operation that includes a $60 billion supply chain and reported $77 billion in revenues for fiscal year 2010, but it has a lot of competition. Amazon Web Services, Google and Apple are three of the biggest, stretching from the tablet market to the enterprise space.
Hewlett-Packard is focusing on both segments, and not always with different offerings. In his speech at the D9 conference, CEO Leo Apotheker revealed some of his company’s plans for webOS, the mobile platform it has acquired as a part of the Palm deal. It will eventually install it on every PC it ships, not to mention mobile devices targeting both personal and business users.
