Kinect hacked for glasses-free 3D teleconferencing [Video]

The potential for Kinect is limitless, and I don’t think we have even seen the surface of what is possible is even close to being scratched yet, and this example of Kinect hacking is just one of the many things that have been done with just the first generation of Kinect.

The possibilities as we move forward, and as Microsoft releases even more software development kits and APIs, I believe will surprise a lot of people.

It is still early days, but these researchers have managed to put together a 3D video chat example using Kinect, or rather four Kinects to render the video and then on the receiving end, they employed headtracking so that people watching will see the live video in 3D, without any 3D glasses to boot.

About Steven Hodson

In his own words, Steven Hodson is "just a cranky old fart who has been around the computer industry for more years than I can count." He doesn't like PR spin and "fanbois" irritates him to no end. While he is a Microsoft enthusiast, he is not an apologist, and has no qualms about giving leveling criticism where it's deserved.
