Pervasive—this could probably be the best word to describe the open cloud today. At the large scale that it is, the open cloud is now driving cloud adoption in varied industries, and even contributing to
IPO fever. Some experts dub it as an old concept that is given a new approach, but no matter how you look at it, companies are starting to
revolutionize the cloud.
Hadoop, one of the biggest names in the open source cloud market, is able to work with tons of nodes and petabytes of data. With plenty of opportunities within this space, competition also stiffens. HPCC Systems, a known alternative for Hadoop, has found a perfect match with
LexisNexis. What used to be just the largest computer-based legal research firm is now gathering leading technologies to deliver topical content, information analytics and workflow solutions. In addition, LexisNexis tapped HPCC to deliver new risk solutions in the market. They are also seeing LexisNexis capabilities that are obvious weaknesses of Hadoop, in terms of technology, the amount of data in can process at once, and its business model.
James M. Peck, chief executive officer at
LexisNexis Risk Solutions, explains the reason behind the move and his prediction on the open cloud industry. He said, “We feel the time is right to offer our HPCC technology platform as a dual license, open source solution. We believe that HPCC Systems will take big data computing to the next level. We’ve been doing this quietly for years for our customers with great success. We are now excited to present it to the community to spur greater adoption. We look forward to leveraging the innovation of the open source community to further the development of the platform for the benefit of our customers and the community.
The open cloud is also referred to as the problem-solver of the big data dilemma. It’s something that’s more readily addressed when different parties come together in the open cloud to noodle over such issues. The open cloud’s ability to collectively process big data means solutions can be reached sooner, intelligence processed more rapidly, and we can all learn from the emerging data marketplace faster than we’d be able to in our own silos. Big data is an important trend we’re following, especially as it pertains to open cloud developments.
