Facebook’s Road to Media Business, Hastings On-Board—a Key Factor
The personal cloud is bringing massive transformations in interactive computing, mobile and web markets. The seemingly-limitless opportunities within this field have lured Facebook, which is now traversing the path seeking a personalized media offering in video and music. In light of this goal, online movie rental company CEO Netflix, Reed Hastings joins Facebook’s board. This move has created a life-size impression that the world’s favorite social network is gearing up to become a massive media platform.
Hastings shares his excitement in joining Zuck’s phenomenal organization saying, “Facebook is propelling a fundamental change in how people connect with each other and share all kinds of content. I’m looking forward to working with Mark and the rest of the board to help Facebook take advantage of all the opportunities ahead.”
There appears to be a level of mutual admiration, as founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted, ” Reed is an entrepreneur and technologist who has led Netflix to transform the way people watch movies and TV. He has built a culture of continuous rapid innovation, something we share and work hard to build every day.”
Facebook is also seriously considering entering the music realm sometime in the third quarter of this year, according to reports. This became more of a reality rather than a rumor when Facebook tapped music streaming service of Swedish company, Spotify—one of the biggest threat to Apple and iCloud in the US market. These developments surfaced amidst the prediction of the personal cloud industry ballooning to $6 billion by 2016.
With over 600 million active users, Facebook is the largest socnet in existence and they are profoundly competing on many levels with other industry giants such as Google, Apple and Amazon. They focus on a different sector though, but their power lies in user numbers and the highly personalized information they have on those users. They monetize several aspects of user activity simply by keeping them on the site or acting as a personal cloud service through photo uploads, virtual gaming currency, mobile check-ins and more.
