Open source is one of the frontiers of the cloud system. This is why organizations are gambling on the potential of the open source cloud. We’ve already seen recent developments with the Hadoop spin-off, and ongoing developments within the OpenStack initiative. Now, a leading provider of PostgreSQL-based products, EnterpriseDB, joins the parade as they recently launched availability of Postgres Advanced Server 9.0 that promises to savings of more or less 80% versus the common commercial databases existing.

In an official statement following the publication of the development within their yard, President and CEO of EnterpriseDB, Ed Boyajian provided details on customer-centric benefits:

“With the release of Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.0, customers now have more reasons to make the move from large and expensive databases to a highly available enterprise-class database that delivers what they need at a much more affordable price point.

“Advanced Server 9.0 is faster than previous versions, offers built-in high availability options, has greater compatibility with Oracle, and is easier to manage and maintain.”

With Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.0 enterprise-class enhancements, EnterpriseDB clients should expect increased performance with parallel data loader that is 800 percent faster, additional Oracle compatibility, replication from SQL server to PostgreSQL, Postgres Plus infinite cache and high availability features.

EnterpriseDB is also looking at robust database alternatives to avoid vendor lock-in, and has recently announced support to HP-UX operating system that will operate on Itanium-based servers. Additionally, this 9.0 version is Oracle-compatible.

If you recall, Itanium’s actually the center of a controversial lawsuit between HP and Oracle.  Hewlett Packard sued Oracle when the latter decided to stall software development for Itanium microprocessors. The rift was aggravated when HP further accused Oracle of leading customers to adopting the new version that has the so-called “bug fixes” of the current one—a concept that could trigger migration issues anytime.

PostgreSQL is a mature, largest and independent open source database. It is not controlled by a single firm, but is instead a global community of developers and companies that develops the system. PostgreSQL is known for its ability to implement business processing and performance across a broad selection of query-intensive and mixed load applications. PostgreSQL is currently being utilized by big organizations like EMC Greenplum and Teradata Aster Data.
