The State of Online Video: YouTube Still Leads, Hulu Loves Ads

Wake up, go online, check mail, check personal social networks, read some news, play online games, watch videos, check social networks again, watch videos, some more browsing, more video watching, then just squeeze in eating, going to work, doing some errands, then more video watching.  Sounds familiar?  If this is what you’re typical day looks like then you’re one of the 178.4 million American viewers that comScore tackled in their recent survey.

According to comScore, Google and YouTube.com grew its unique viewership 1%, from 147.1 million to 149.2 million, while Vevo’s uniqe audience increased 4%, from 60.3 million to 63 million.  Aside from garnering 99.9 percent of viewed videos from their site, YouTube and comScore is planning to release their YouTube Partnering Report according to Dan Piech of comScore.

Stated on a blog in comScore, “We are excited to announce that through a partnership with YouTube, individual audiences for partners and their channels, (such as CBS, Machinima, Philip DeFranco and hundreds of others) will now be displayed as their own entities underneath the YouTube parent entity. This will enable the owners of these audiences to better monetize their content in unique new ways by having their audiences represented to the agencies and brands that actively use Video Metrix data.”

The most used sites for video watching is as follows: YouTube with 149.3 million unique viewers, followed by VEVo with 63 million, third is Yahoo! With 52.7 million, next is Microsoft with 50.7 million, leaving Viacom at 4th place with 49.5 million unique viewers.  Hulu Placed 9th on unique viewer with 26.7 million, but came in first in terms of highest frequency of video ads.

If you think that watching videos online is just for teens and adults, that’s where you’re wrong.  BabyFirst is a new online service that helps moms and dads keep their infant or toddler busy by delivering hours and hours of videos to be enjoyed by these little angels and helping keep their parent’s sanity.  The makers of this site have pointed out that as early as a few months old, babies are already exposed to watching TV, so instead of these babies accompanying you in watching your favorite soap operas or violent programs, just keep them busy with BabyFirst.  As with most video trends, doctors are not jumping at this idea, as some parents tend to replace human interaction by just letting their kids watch hours of video.  This could be very detrimental to a child’s overall progress.

While watching videos on the internet may be good for boosting YouTube’s ego, Netflix, has hit a wall with its latest pricing scheme, deterring many US viewers.  To alleviate any hometown stagnation, the company opted to launch their service in Latin America and the Caribbean in the following months, and they aim to target viewers in Europe by late 2012 or early 2013.
