Comcast, the leading internet and cable tv provider, is embracing the mobile world as it announced its partnership with Elemental Technologies, the leading provider of video processing solutions for content delivery to TVs, PCs, tablets and mobile devices with the collaboration of thePlatform, the leading online video management and publishing company.
“We are thrilled with this win,” Elemental CEO Sam Blackman told FierceIPTV. “It was a collaborative effort with thePlatform folks and is paying off in a big win at Comcast HQ Philadelphia. It’s enormously important for us… having the No. 1 service provider in the world select your technology is a vote of confidence that’s unique.”
“The video processing industry has been dominated by a couple of large companies for a long time,” said Blackman. “Comcast and other MSOs and media companies want new technology from young, agile companies. This is a great opportunity to have validation that we can compete with anyone in the world.”
This move by Comcast is in part thanks to rivals like Netflix and Hulu, for always keeping the company on its toes. Though Comcast is leading the pack in many regards, they don’t plan to let the competition catch up with them.
But Netflix is said to be in talks with DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. for streaming rights. HBO is said to be releasing DreamWorks from their original deal early. The source of the information declined to give his identity, and details of the collaboration because it is still not official. Spokepersons for both companies declined to comment on the matter. Netflix already has streaming deals from Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures, Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. and Miramax, which was seen as one of the reasons for a decline in DVD sales. As for Hulu, the company is still waiting for someone to acquire them, as Apple and others seems to be turning away.
