The Larry’s Head to Court as Google Faces Fire from All Sides

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and Google CEO Larry Page have been ordered to mediations, and both CEOs are requested to both appear for at least two full days in court for the hearing set on October.  It’s a possibility that first came up last week, and the presiding judge is seeing this through.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, “U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal said in an order filed last Friday in a California court that Ellison and Page are required to attend a settlement conference on September 19, with the expectation that they may begin to work out a resolution prior to a trial scheduled for October.”

A private mediation between the two companies previously failed but it seems like they are open for settlement as the hearing draws near.  People familiar with the matter stated that Ellison and Page both plan to attend the said conference.

WSJ also stated that “a direct meeting between the CEOs of Oracle and Google would provide something of a study in contrasts. Ellison is a veteran CEO who exudes a defiant swagger, while Page presents himself publicly as more of a soft-spoken engineer.”

Aside from Oracle, the Android platform is under attack from various companies such as Apple and Microsoft.  So, fend off current and future patent infringement lawsuits, Google just armed itself with 1,023 patents acquired from IBM.  The reason for building an arsenal of patents is to counter a “hostile, organized campaign.”
