Anonymous To Attack NYSE On October 10th Siding with Occupy Wall Street

Last week, Anonymous released a video threatening the New York Police Department that they will bring them down after a video showing police brutality towards participants of Occupy Wall Street surfaced the web.  The group threatened that if the violence does not stop within 36 hours after the video was launched, Anonymous will go forth with the attack on NYPD.

Since no news of any Anonymous hacking took place last week, the Department of Homeland Security warns Wall Street that Anonymous may be planning an attack.  According to an Anonops’ blog post, a recently released Department of Homeland Security bulletin said the group “will continue to exploit vulnerable publicly available web servers, computer networks and other digital information mediums for the foreseeable future”.

“Anonymous stands in solidarity with us, and they’re non violent. They have legitimate grievances — they have reasons to be upset with the way the internet works — but sometimes the way they put that out there isn’t beneficial,” Occupy Wall Street spokesman Patrick Bruener said.

The DHS warning is based on a video posted by Anonymous on YouTube stating that in lieu of recent events in Wall Street, especially those incidents involving brutality enforced by the authority, the hactivist collective will bring down the New York Stock Exchange on October 10th 3:30 EST.

“The hactivist collective, Anonymous, is well known for using cyber-attacks against governments involved in suppressing protest and free-speech rights across the world,” says SiliconANGLE HackANGLE editor Kit Dotson. “We’ve also seen them target police organizations in the United States such as the Texas sheriffs and before that AZDPS by LulzSec.” We can expect that they will react in similar outrage when Occupy Wall Street protesters clash with New York police, he adds, “Although the protests have had very few incidents for their continuing extended stay, those that do occur are widely publicized due to the near-ubiquity of camera-enabled smartphones and broad citizen journalism.”

According to the video, Anonymous is planning to use Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.  This type of attack is an organized effort to coordinate an assault on the target website in an attempt to drive off any legitimate traffic.  A DDoS attack is comparable to a group of people blocking the entrance to Apple stores to prevent consumers from getting their hands on the new iPhone.

Anonymous ended their video with their famous line, “Vox Populi, Vox Anon.  The Voice of the People is the Voice of Anonymous.  We are Anonymous.  We are Legion.  We are the 99%.  We do not forgive.  We do not forget.  Wall Street Expect Us.”
