How Many Android Tablets are in the Wild?

Walt Mossberg interviewed Google’s mobile chief Andy Rubin in All Things D’s AsiaD, the company’s inaugural expansion on a global stage.  They talked about the just-launched Galaxy Nexus that uses facial recognition to unlock the smartphone, Google’s answer to Apple’s Siri.  They’ve also tackled about Google’s competitors who Rubin pointed out as anyone who makes platform for mobile devices, namely Apple and Microsoft.  When asked about RIM, Rubin did not blatantly say that they consider them as competition but said, “I think they’re very smart. They’re Canadian.”

Mossberg threw a curve ball at Rubin when he asked why “Android tablets have completely flopped in the marketplace?”  Rubin answered, “I wouldn’t say completely flopped.”  Rubin added that there are a little more than six million Android tablets out there running Google’s services, not counting other tablets such as Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color.

“Six million is pretty healthy but it is not 30 million,” Rubin said. “Obviously, we need to get there.”

Yes, you read that right.  There are over six million Android tablets out in the wild.  If you’re wondering why, it’s because Android is an open platform so a lot tablet manufacturers use it to run their device.  Android tablets are like Mogwais, the cute little critters from the movie Gremlins, which multiply when they get wet.  Android devices keep multiplying as more tablet makers use this platform.
