Three’s A Crowd: Android, Apple and Samsung Are Winning

It seems like domination in the mobile dictionary would either mean Apple or Android. The two brands are doing quite well in their respective segments, thanks to the uprising of mobile consumerism. The October Millennial Media Mobile Report reveals that Apple is still the number one device manufacturer, with around 24% share. With the 4S boost, the iPhone still is unbending as it captures the prime spot for the Top 20 mobile phones for October.  Android, on the other hand, is sitting pretty at the top with 14 out of 20 mobile phones using its OS, rounding up a 24% market share as well.

Did iPhone 4S Disappoint? Android Stuns With New Phones

The iPhone 4S sales were beyond phenomenal. They sold over 4 million units in the first days after the launch. But not everyone’s happy with the device, which seemed premature at times considering the fewer-than-expected feature updates.  Just today, reports of SIM card failure spreads across all carriers.  Other recent issues include battery life, Siri voice recognition system failure, and muted, outgoing calls.  Despite these drawbacks, the iPhone maintains a top spot in every holiday wish list.  And even though the latest model has not been launched in other parts of the world, the possibility of an upcoming iPhone 5 release is already titillating smartphone fanatics.

Meanwhile, Blackberry continues to decline in the manufacturer’s rank impressions, placing only fourth after Apple, HTC and Samsung.  In October, the outage that caused fury amongst users and RIM investors started to show doubt in the company.

Our own John Casaretto noted a study in which smartphone trends reveal Android’s dominance in the marketplace. From the 20 mobile phones listed in the study, Android took 14 spots on the list, reiterating OEM support for the open platform, even as its ecosystem comes under threat by royalty payments and infringement suits from Android rivals.

Samsung takes the cake

While Samsung knows they are out to chase superstars in the mobile arena, they are taking on the challenge and could launch an iPhone 4S killer in March. The Millennial Media study also showed a 7% month-over-month growth and six out of twenty mobile phones belong to Samsung. The good-looking Samsung Galaxy Ace Hugo Boss edition is a perfect epitome of sophistication and sleekness.

New Year’s Resolution: Develop More Apps

Nearly a month before the world bids farewell to 2011, mobile developers are pursuing the direction of creating more applications in the coming year. More than 40% of developers who responded to the study are gearing up to introduce new apps in the market. Apps purchases are expected to radically increase during the holiday season as well. The booming reliance of people on smartphones will drive growth for the mobile apps economy, a reflection of other industries that pin big hopes on the holiday season.

Other avenues that developers will explore include maximizing revenues through existing infrastructures and services (21%), improving discovery and strengthening research programs (12%), marketing and advertising (10%), learning new programming language (10%) and finding a new distribution channel (5%).
