Rumor: Is Microsoft really in the ‘early stages of licensing’ for a Kinect-enabled TV?

Microsoft is working hard behind the scenes and right up in front to bring Kinect technology into commercial enterprise. It has already proven itself as a powerful human-computer interface for video games, and now with the Kinect Accelerator program, but what about overtaking the living room for families without an Xbox gaming console?

Well, The Daily has surfaced a rumor that suggests Microsoft is working towards a Kinect-enabled TV by licensing its technology to television hardware manufacturers such as Vizio and Sony.

Unfortunately, this rumor is sourced anonymously by the article in question. Sony Electronics, the department in charge of TVs, is separate from Sony Online Entertainment—the department that runs the now-infamous PlayStation Network and thus implicated in its recent disruption. Sony and Microsoft are set squarely against one another as competitors for both technology and software and even gamers.

A Kinect-enabled TV could go a long ways for Microsoft, in fact, disentangling the Kinect from the Xbox for a set-top-box that delivers TV control and connects to the Internet could be a killer-device. Microsoft is well known for purchasing startups or buying outright a new division to produce such new products and this sort of news would be stratospheric.

Right now, we’re seeing Microsoft moving their Xbox console into all the spaces that we’d expect an Internet-enabled set-top-box to stand. It’s already a powerful venue for entertainment, contains a lot of living room cloud-based technology, and even weaves in mobile-gaming with Windows Phones.

A Kinect-enabled TV would distract consumers from this powerful all-in-one entertainment device that Microsoft is pushing towards dominating the living room.

So I am going to withhold judgment on this rumor until some sort of press release or practical product is brought out by either Microsoft or one of these licensees.
