This Week in Cloud: The Ship Has Sailed

This week there have been several momentous updates, a part of which are not necessarily news but are momentous developments nevertheless.  The main highlight in this category is a new report by Cisco, the first in a series of Global Cloud Index studies, which cover the growth in cloud traffic over the years.

The networking company expects very rapid uptake by the year 2015, when data originating from cloud  datacenters will add up to an annual traffic rate of 1.6 zettabytes, or a third of total datacenter traffic – significantly larger than the current statistics.

The cloud and big data are evidently colliding from more directions than one (a trend that has even been made the main theme of at least one high profile conference this year), and this week spurred additional evidence of that.  Klint Finley picked up on a job posting by Amazon Web Services searching for several new employees to contribute to a new data stream processing service, and it has left plenty of room for speculation.

More data is going through the cloud with enterprises modernizing their IT infastructure, but also from consumers. Mobile users have become a sort of icon of this part of this growth trend, and this week has seen a couple of developments in this space as well. Brightcove, a company that has gradually been moving beyond being simply a media services provider, took a significant leap yesterday.  It released the Brightcove App Cloud into beta, a web-based platform that essentially optimizes HTML5 apps to individual Android and iOS devices.

Subsequently Box teamed-up with LG for an interesting mobile sales initiative. Every user that logs into Box for Android from a support LG handset before March 31 2012 gets a free sample of the storage service’s premium offerings.
