CES 2012 Kicks Off With Eye-Controlled Computers, New Smart TVs

The 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show kicked off Sunday, January 8, 2012 at Las Vegas.  Though the conference proper will start tomorrow, January 10, and will run through the 13th, exhibitors have already set up their booths to showcase their upcoming products, and many have already made early announcements regarding the event.

Let’s take a look at what products have been creating a buzz so far:

Tobii

Tobii Technology, A Swedish manufacturer of hardware and software solutions for eye tracking (known for revolutionizing research in many fields and enabled communication for thousands of people with special needs), is ready to go mainstream.

At their 2012 CES booth, they hooked up their Tobii software to Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system.  People visiting their booth can try out their “gaze interaction” system, which allows users to control their computer screens with their eyes, scrolling through Web pages and photo slide shows with mere glances, blowing up asteroids by staring at them and giving new meaning to the idea of looking something up.

According to Tobii, “they want to expand beyond consumer applications and use the eye-tracking technology for medical purposes, such as allowing technicians to use their eyes to move through photographs, scans or X-rays, potentially while using their hands to operate medical machinery, make notes or physically examine a patient.”

Sony

Sony is prepping for their press event which will be at 5PM PT, today, January 9.  The press event will probably focus on the Sony PlayStation Vita, which launched in Japan last December.  Aside from that, they brought a new line of smartphones, Smart TV, and tablets.

Consumer Electronics Association director of industry analysis Steve Koening predicts that this year, global tech spending might reach $1 trillion as people around the world are so interested in owning a tech gadget in one form or another.

“It underscores just the magnitude of this marketplace,” said Koenig.  “When you’re talking about a market of 3 1/2 billion people that all want TVs, that all want phones, that’s a huge market opportunity…. I don’t know when we’re going to hit $2 trillion, but with the pace of growth in these emerging economies, it probably won’t take long.”
