Marvell Goes Big at CES: SATA Controller, Charitable Mobility

Hardware maker Marvell is one of the companies that have already made several announcements at CES 2012. One of the new products is the Marvell 88SE9230 6Gb/s SATA controller. The product is designed to power consumer electronics, and the sales pitch focuses on a big performance boost at a lowered price.

The 88SE9230 leverages the HyperDuo processing optimization technology to offer an affordable alternative to flash. It packs twice as much performance and capacity as the former version of the controller chip. The product features four ports for either SSD or HDD in addition to two PCIe 2.0 lanes that offer twice as much throughput for SATA SSDs. Marvell offers some more details:

“The 88SE9230 SATA controller uses intelligent algorithms to automatically pin hot data files and directories to up to three SATA SSDs while enabling all data to be safely stored on larger capacity SATA HDDs. The 9230 is also designed to provide unparalleled security, including 128/256 bit on-the-fly AES encryption to ensure maximum data security.”

Marvell has taken the economic side to a whole new level in the mobile scene during this year’s CES. It has entered into a joint initiative with the One Laptop per Child non-profit to design a low-cost tablet for children in developing nations. The 8-inch device runs on an Armada PXA618 system-on-chip from Marvell. The price tag will be around $100, and there are a number of other interesting details such as a choice to install a Pixel Qi display, which is specifically designed for use in broad daylight – a very likely scenario that OLPC took into consideration.

Earlier this year, Marvell announced the  DragonFly Virtual Storage Accelerator.
