dotCloud is a PaaS provider with a very simple agenda: supporting as many languages and databases as possible, with the intent of providing developers with flexibility otherwise not be available on competing platforms. Today the company made the latest push to strengthen this plan.
As of this morning dotCloud offers three new things to its users. The first one is support for WebSockets, enabling real-time, bi-directional communication between frontend and backend code to boost the web browsing experience. In addition, dotCloud now features vertical scaling. The ability to scale up an instance translates into developers having more flexibility when it comes to supporting their ever-growing databases, which require more computational power as increase in size.
“We believe there is a fundamental shift happening in the way applications are created: developers should be able to leverage any combination of languages and databases, integrated with a set of services, to build products from beginning to end” said Solomon Hykes, co-founder and CEO of dotCloud. “This is Full-Stack Development and we are focused on delivering that promise.”
The third and final addition to dotCloud is support for MongoDB 2.0. The company announced support for the previous version of the NoSQL database back in November last year, and today finally optimized its platform to support the newer release. The November update featured several enhancements to the platform, similarly to this latest one.
In addition to extending support to include MongoDB the company also opened up the PaaS solution to developers working with MySQL and Redis, an alternative NoSQL DB. The concept of “Full-Stack Development” was very evident back then as well, and it’s drawing more and more attention as the three Vs of big data – volume, velocity and variety – drive companies towards adopting new solutions.
