Kognitio Extends Platform to Amazon Web Services

Kognitio, a company that offers an in-memory big data analytics platform, made its software available on AWS this week. This opens up its product to smaller customers that may not be interested in a particularly large deployment, as well as ones that do but find the AWS model more appealing.

The cloud-optimized service named Kognitio Cloud is available on AWS Cluster Compute as well as via the AWS Marketplace as an Amazon Machine Image. An AMI is a pre-configured nod that can be fired up right off the bat, and makes a lot of sense from an economic standpoint.

“AWS’ flexibility, coupled with Kognitio Cloud’s ease of use and scalability, makes it possible for companies to load and obtain results from terabyte-sized data sets within 15 minutes,” said Kognitio senior vice president John Coppins. He added that Kognitio’s pricing allows companies to run queries for as little as 64 cents per hour, and said a full production license will be included.

The convergence between the cloud and big data is something that is only beginning to be effectively realized now.  Applying the economics of scale that the former offers to analytics allows insight to trickle down from Fortune 500 enterprises to smaller players as well. Hadoop distributor MapR reached the same conclusion, and made its own platform available on AWS not too long ago.

The company’s M3 and M5 distros can run on Amazon Elastic MapReduce, and a number of other services including CloudWatch have been modified to support the software. And speaking of Hadoop, Kognitio managed to get a foothold here too.

A couple of months ago we’ve learned of a partnership between the firm and HortonWorks to connect Kognitio’s solution with the analytics engine via a custom connector that works with any Apache-compatible distribution.
