Can Rovio’s Bad Piggies Fare Better than Amazing Alex?

Rovio, best known for the sustained momentum that earned Angry Birds over one billion downloads to date, is branching out.

Capitalizing on the success of the physics-game franchise, the Finnish game developer released a teaser trailer of an upcoming game called Bad Piggies, which will allow the player to enjoy the Angry Birds universe from the pigs’ point of view.

The 32-second YouTube video Rovio released a few days ago doesn’t reveal too much, but by the looks of it the company has no plans to abandon the physics genre.

“This innovative game turns the franchise on its head by letting the fans play as the pigs. Bad Piggies gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the Angry Birds universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes,” Rovio said.

The launch date for iOS, Android and Mac is September 27, although you’ll have to wait a bit longer if you’re a Windows Phone or PC user. Rovio didn’t specify when it will release the game for these platforms.

Just a couple of months ago the company launched Amazing Alex. The title borrows some of the physics elements found in Angry Birds but is more puzzle oriented, but that wasn’t enough to make it the next record-shattering app.  According to research from AppData it’s one of the top 100 paid apps in the U.S and is among the 50 most popular paid games – not nearly as successful as Rovio’s other games, but a profitable venture nonetheless.

The numbers indicate that users aren’t bored with Angry Birds just yet, and anticipation for Bad Piggies is building up as we get close to the release date. Meanwhile however, it looks like Draw Something – another immensely-popular title – is losing a sizable portion of its momentum.
