New Nokia Phones Bake In Augmented Reality Tech

Today’s mobile news roundup features: the latest Nokia-Microsoft leaks; the new availability for BBC iPlayer mobile downloads; Brazil’s expansion leading to Lenovo’s two-week high; Baidu launching a mobile browser; and the Galaxy SIII named the first to be compatible with Orange’s Quick Tap payment service.

Nokia phones to have augmented reality technology

More teasers regarding Nokia’s new smartphone/s are coming out.  Yesterday, we featured the video “Things Are About To Change” wherein nothing much about the device was unveiled.  But we learned more when another video surfaced: “Stay Tuned”, wherein a woman walking  with headphones on passed by a shop and sees some virtual information about the venue.  This hints at  Nokia’s take on augmented reality technology, which we already heard about back in March of this year, the Nokia City Lens.  It allows you to use your camera to get information about the things around you.

So far, what we know about, or think we know about what Nokia is going to unveil tomorrow is that they’ll debut the Nokia Lumia 920 PureView, which features an 8 megapixel camera (not a 41MP camera like the 808 PureView, the Lumia 802 Arrow, and the Lumia 820).  All will be Windows Phone 8 based.  Aside from that, we’ve seen photos featuring a wireless dock charger, wireless earbuds with charger, and wireless headphones for accessories.

BBC iPlayer mobile downloads now available

The BBC iPlayer app will now allow viewers to download their favorite shows so they can watch whatever they want, whenever they want, even without a WiFi, 3G or 4G signal.  And the great thing about the app upgrade is that when you download a show, you have 30 days to enjoy it without hassle.  Though the BBC iPlayer app is available for iOS and Android devices, the mobile download feature is available for iOS devices for now but will soon be available for Android devices.

“With mobile downloads for BBC iPlayer, you can now load up your mobile phone or tablet with hours and hours of BBC television programmes, then watch them on the road, on the tube, on a plane, without worrying about having an internet connection or running up a mobile data bill,” Daniel Danker, General Manager, Programmes and On-Demand for the BBC said.  “Viewers have up to 30 days to begin watching a downloaded programme, so you can even fill up your device and take the BBC with you on holiday.”

Brazil expansion leads to Lenovo’s two-week high

Lenovo traded highest in Hong Kong after their CEO announced that they’ll be announcing their Brazilian expansion plan tomorrow.  Lenovo rose by 1.2 percent to close at HK$6.62, the highest they ever traded since August 21st.

Chief Executive Officer Yang Yuanqing will make the “biggest announcement in the company’s history in Brazil” tomorrow, Lenovo said in a statement but aside from that, nothing was revealed.

Baidu launches mobile browser

China’s largest browser, Baidu, is expanding their reach with the release of their mobile browser yesterday.  Baidu’s mobile browser offers speedy download times, Baidu services, the ability to run apps directly off the Internet.  The company also announced that they would be investing in a new cloud-computing center to have better control on how internet users access content over their smartphones.

Galaxy SIII now compatible with Orange’s contactless payment service

Samsung’s Galaxy SIII is the first device compatible with Orange’s Quick Tap contactless payment system, which works in conjunction with BarclayCard.  The NFC chip in the Galaxy SIII allows the devices to be used for contactless payment and according to Orange, anyone who buys an Orange Samsung Galaxy S III from Wednesday and has a UK MasterCard or Visa card, will be able to use the handset to make contactless payments of up to £20.
