Cisco’s New Security Software for Hybrid Data centers, BYOD

Networking kingpin Cisco announced a number of new and updated solutions that address the security needs of the modern data center.

The Adaptive Security Appliance 1000V, which also goes by the name of Cloud Firewall, stands out the most. Cisco touts it as an all-in-one cloud firewall that can enforce a single policy across both physical and virtual infrastructure.

“Why is it important that we’re announcing these products today? It all has to do with data centers being transformed–when are they not? But over the past three years, we’ve seen a lot of significant changes that businesses are starting to grapple with,” said Jeff Aboud, marketing manager for Cisco’s enterprise security solutions. Those changes include “a massive increase in application traffic and network connections per second,” which he said has been challenging the ability of businesses to sufficiently scale up their networks.

Also new to the Cisco security portfolio is v9.0 of its Adaptive Security Appliance. The mobile security platform can now be clustered to create a setup with 320 Gbps firewall and 60 Gbps of IP throughput, with a maximum capacity of 1 million connections per second.

The third product unveiled this week is the IPS 4500 series “data-center-grade intrusion prevention system.” It’s coupled by the launch of Cisco Security Manager 4.3, and  AnyConnect  3.1 – a remote access interface that gives organizations more control over the devices that employees bring to the office.

BYOD is sweeping through the enterprise, but while the trend does present its advantages it’s still a huge security risk. In a recent report Trend Micro said that almost half the firms that have a BYOD policy in place have experienced a data breach.
