Salesforce Enters Cloud File Synchronization Market with Chatterbox

Salesforce is entering the fast growing cloud-based synchronization and collaboration space.  Chatterbox will be the newest competitor for Box, DropBox and the dozens of other file sync services currently in the market. The announcement was made at this week’s TechCrunch Disrupt Conference in San Francisco by Salesforce.com’s CEO Marc Benioff.

The announcement about the new product was brief and unexpected. Benioff shared the news about Chatterbox during an interview with Michael Arrington when he was talking about a panel discussion that occurred earlier that day with BOX co-founder and CEO Aaron Levie. “Our customers have come to us and told us they wanted ‘Dropbox’ for the Enterprise. They want it integrated with our platform. They want our trust model, our security model. They want to have application services,” Benioff said. He went on to add, “They want to build apps with Force.com and do Chatterbox. They want to use Heroku and do Chatterbox. They want to use it on their own. So we have to step up and deliver Chatterbox.”

Arrington then pointed out that he was the founder of Box and as Arrington had stated, he wanted to “kill” Box but Benioff objected to the idea. He does not believe business should be like The Hunger Games. Business is not some sort of “zero-sum game.” He added that if you’re innovative and add some value and deliver value back to customers, then you will get value back from the world. Good karma and technology. Did you hear that Apple and Oracle?

Aaron Levie, Box CEO, joked about the announcement saying the name sounded familiar, but then he turned serious while discussing how Salesforce usually generates products that serve the ecosystem. Levie said Box is a lot more broad;it includesSalesforce and everything else.

Benioff has not released any additional details about Chatterbox. He promises to reveal more at Salesforce’s upcoming annual conference, Dreamforce.
